Ingredients
  • 1 block of extra-firm tofu
  • 2 tbsp sea salt
  • 1 tbsp tamari sauce
  • 2 tbsp Jamaican jerk paste recipe below
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil
  • 1 lemon – for garnish
Instructions
  1. Set the block of tofu on its side. Cut it crosswise into 5 slabs of steak.
  2. Bring 2 cups of water to a rolling bowl. Add salt and stir to dissolve. Pour water over tofu. Set aside for 15 minutes.
  3. Prepare jerk paste.
  4. Remove tofu from water and allow to drain in a strainer or colander for 15 minutes. Afterwards, pat dry surface with clean towel.
  5. Pour tamari sauce on tofu steaks. Gently slather jerk paste on each steak. Turn over and repeat. Allow the tofu to marinate in the paste for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Heat a grill pan on medium high heat(a heavy, flat-bottomed skillet will also work). Add oil and allow oil to heat for 30 seconds. Add tofu steaks, gently pressing down onto pan. Reduce heat to medium and each steak remain until brown – 3 to 5 minutes. Turn and repeat.
  7. Remove tofu steaks from grill pan. Garnish with lemon slices and serve with your favorite sauce.
Recipe Notes

I often serve my Jamaican Jerk Tofu Steaks with a simple, but delicious mango sauce that beautifully complements the spiciness of the steak. Simply add the meat of a ripe mango to a blender. Puree until smooth and serve with tofu.
